Dropping Courses

Often students may have to attend a few classes before deciding if a course is right for them. If it is decided not to continue with the course, students should review the before officially withdrawing. Withdrawing from a course after the deadline will have financial and academic consequences.

Note: Non-attendance does not constitute an official withdrawal from a course. Courses must be dropped online through Self Service Banner.


The does not apply to:

  • Executive MBA & Master of Finance programs

Academic & Financial Consquences

  • Dropping a course may also affect a student's full-time status at the University. Students need to be registered in a minimum of 3 courses per term to be considered a full-time student.
  • Not being a full-time student can affect:

    • Student Loans
    • Scholarships
    • Third-party sponsorships
    • Study permits for international students.

How to Drop Courses

  1. Log in to Self Service Banner 
  2. Enter your smu.ca email address a²Ô»å password. 
  3. Click on the three lines on the top left to expand the dashboard. Choose Applications from the given options.
  4. Select the "Banner Self-Service" tab, then select the following tab sequence: Student Information > Student Landing Page > Student Profile > Registration > Register for Classes. (Note: you may be prompted to log in again.)
  5. Select the appropriate term from the drop-down menu. 
  6. In the bottom right-hand corner, you will see your registered classes. Beside each course is a drop-down menu. 
  7. Select “Web Drop”. 
  8. ³§±ð±ô±ð³¦³Ù “Submit”.
